I am a Jar

This morning at my church, Elevation Church, one of the greatest encouragers I will ever know, Larry Brey (Twitter: @LBrey) preached wonderful sermon on “Labels and Lids.” One of the greatest life analogies I have ever heard is from LB (he had previously taught some of us at Elevation’s AppState location from a similar thread using a different passage of Scripture). He says that we are jars. Every jar is different in size, shape and has a different purpose, as illustrated below by some lovely mason jars.

ImageWhen continuing the analogy, we as jars deal with 2 things that can limit our potential: labels and lids. In a condensed version of LB’s words, labels can distort or define our identity (do we allow mislabels to lead us down the wrong path? Do we allow others’ labels to distort God’s truths about us. Or do we allow the label of Christ to change everything and speak to my identity IN Him?) Then lids can restrain or release our potential by limiting our growth, preventing God to fill us with His truth, etc. Lids are representations of our sins. Only Jesus can remove our lids so that the presence of God can come in. We are empty vessels ready to be filled with His goodness and the Word so that we can in turn pour out His glory and love in the world. To sum things up, it absolutely rocked my world. It was punch an incredible and practical teaching in how to view our day to day relationships and our overall walk with Christ ( being filled, pouring out, overflowing, etc.).

During the message, the conversation of labels hit me really hard. So often I find my identity based on those around me, my actions, etc. rather than turning to God for fulfillment and I answers. I allow others to label me. I define myself by my past. You get the point. However, the way to see it is that only the Creator can label His creation. One of LB’s ideas was to write down 50 labels God has called us and to read them every day to remember who I am and who my identity is in Him. So I’ve created my list and thought I would share with you in hopes that you also can see what God says about His children.

Another note…. This list is one of what God has called me to, what I strive toward. Many of these things are not only His promises but also His commands. I can only do these things through Christ, because it is impossible on my own. Please be praying for me as I strive to believe in God’s power in me and in spite of me. I cannot wait to see how He uses this to inspire me to achieve things for His glory.

Hope you have a wonderful New Years holiday. Remember to look to Jesus for your identity this year!
